In 2010, THE KOXX (Coxx), which appeared like a comet by introducing a new music genre called electro garage, has grown into a mid-sized band in its 7th year. Despite the member's military service and other breaks, Cox's musical achievements are noteworthy. Even at a time when interest in K-POP wasn't as great as it is now, they held active performances in Thailand, Singapore, China, and Japan, and received interest and expectations from many people with their unique rock music in line with the world's trends. The second regular album 'the new normal', released after the break, captured their musical capabilities intact and achieved the feat of selecting the best modern rock part at the 2016 Korean Popular Music Awards.

Koxx's music, which does not stay in one place and always pursues new changes and growth, is about to evolve once again. As time passed, their music naturally grew, and they are preparing to write a new chapter. This work, 'RED', is an album that announces Koxx's musical turning point. Unlike previous works that sang in English, the Korean lyrics, which were completed after much consideration to express honest feelings, boldly depict their more mature music. In addition, their performance and arrangement techniques, which were embodied in unique sounds, reached maturity and firmly established Koxx's own style.

#lol (hashtag LOL), which opens the door to this mini-album, is a very unique song. The repetitive bass groove and stimulating guitar performance heighten the tension and create a different excitement. From the first theme played, 'Burton', which clearly conveys Koxx-likeness, can be a definite answer to the question of what danceable rock music is. The following '0 (zero)' can be said to be a modern interpretation of classic rock music with a complex composition and dramatic progression. The overlapping of the sound that builds up between the songs makes the song's completeness more solid. Koxx is widely known for their danceable and powerful rock music, but each album has tracks filled with their emotions. Following 'Words' and 'Ice Cap', 'grey', which will be Koxx's new emotional number, is a song that stands out with honest lyrics about the uneasy future, as if it contains their current feelings.

In order to neatly and boldly organize the numerous layers of sound, Kim Han-goo and John P. Koos, who understand their music best, are mix engineers, and David Bowie and world-renowned mastering engineer Joe LaFolta, who mastered Foo Fighters, LaPorta) participated to complete the delivery of delicate notes. 2010년, 일렉트로 개러지라는 새로운 음악장르를 선보이며 혜성처럼 등장한 THE KOXX(칵스)는 어느덧 7년차의 중견 밴드로 성장하였다. 멤버들의 군 복무와 같은 휴식기가 있었음에도 불구하고, 칵스가 보여준 음악적 성과는 주목할 만 하다. K-POP에 대한 관심이 지금같이 크지 않던 시기에도 태국, 싱가폴, 중국, 일본등에서 활발한 공연을 펼쳤고, 세계의 트렌드에 발맞춰 보여준 개성적인 록음악으로 많은 이들의 관심과 기대를 받았다. 휴식기 이후에 발표한 두 번째 정규앨범 ‘the new normal’은 그들의 음악적 역량을 고스란히 담아내며 2016 한국대중음악상 최우수 모던록부분을 선정하는 쾌거를 달성하기도 하였다.

한 곳에 머무르지 않고 항상 새로운 변화를 꾀하며 성장을 추구하는 칵스의 음악은, 다시 한 번 새롭게 진화하려 하고 있다. 시간이 흐르듯 그들의 음악도 자연스럽게 성장하였고, 새로운 챕터를 써내려 갈 준비를 하고 있다. 본작 ‘RED’는 그러한 칵스의 음악적 터닝포인트를 알리는 음반이다. 영어로 노래를 불러왔던 전작들과 달리, 솔직한 감정을 표현하기 위해 많은 고민 끝에 완성시킨 한글가사들은 더욱 성숙해진 그들의 음악을 대담하게 그려낸다. 또한 독특한 사운드로 구현되었던 그들의 연주와 편곡의 테크닉들은 원숙의 경지에 이르러 칵스만의 스타일을 굳건히 정립하게 되었다.

이번 미니앨범의 포문을 여는 #lol (해시태그 엘오엘)은 무척 독특한 곡이다. 반복되는 베이스 그루브와 자극적인 기타연주가 긴장감을 고조시키며 색다른 흥겨움을 만들어낸다. 처음 연주되는 테마부터, 칵스다움을 여실히 들려주는 ‘부르튼’은 댄서블한 록음악이란 무엇인가라는 질문에 대해 확실한 대답이 될 수 있다. 이어지는 ‘0(제로)’는 복잡한 구성과 드라마틱한 진행으로 클래식 록음악의 현대적인 해석이라고 할 수 있다. 곡 사이사이 켠켠이 쌓여가는 사운드의 중첩은 곡의 완성도를 더욱 탄탄하게 만들고 있다. 댄서블하고 강력한 록음악으로 널리 알려진 칵스이지만, 앨범마다 그들의 감성을 가득 담은 트랙들이 있다. ‘Words’, ‘ice cap’의 뒤를 잇는 칵스만의 새로운 감성넘버가 될 ‘grey’는 현재 그들의 심정을 담은 듯, 불안한 미래를 노래하는 솔직한 가사가 돋보이는 곡이다.
