Description

록계에서 그들이 차지하는 위치는 독특하다. 홍대를 기반으로 활동하면서 대중매체를 넘나든다. 또 명맥이 끊겨버린 팝록을 잇는 후예로 꼽히기도 한다. 그러나 정작 본인들은 펑크의 적자(嫡子)임을 주장한다.
외부에서 바라본 기대치와 본인들이 품은 이상향의 불일치. 메이저를 겨냥하면서도 뼛속 깊이 마이너한 삐긋거림이 이들을 無 장르의 독립적 포지션으로 올려놓았다.
특히나 이번 EP는 향후 행보를 가늠할 분기점이다. 1집의 흔적을 지워내고 백지에서 새롭게 썼다. 또한 넓어진 음악적 시야를 새로운 재료들로 실험했다.
눈여겨볼 점은 다층적으로 풍부해진 사운드. 3인조 밴드 복식을 멀찌감치 벗어던졌다. 전자기타 아래로 퉁퉁 깔린 어쿠스틱 기타, 공중을 횡으로 가르는 신시사이저, 안달복달하는 FX 효과음. 부지불식간에 팝으로까지 영역을 넓혔다.
음악적 지향점 역시도 다채로워졌다. 보컬 '비엔나핑거' 특유의 뽕삘이 묻어나는 '낚시왕'으로는 대중적 주목을 이끌어 내고, 'DDANCE'에서는 피싱걸스식 '힙'을 드러냈다. '누가 뭐래도 이 노랜 러브스토리'로는 90년대 유로팝 정서를 팝펑크 형식으로 재현했으며, 반전을 품은 '안녕 엄마'에서는 숨긴 발톱을 드러냈다.
새삼스럽지만 현시점에 피싱걸스 '같은' 밴드는 없다. 가사적 발칙함으로 규정할 수도, 특정 장르로 꿰어 묶을 수도 없게 됐다.

왜 아무도 더 이상 록에 춤추지 않는 거지? 페스티벌을 춤추게 만들고 싶다는 생각으로 썼다. 어쩌면 록이 아닌 댄스 섹션에 꽂히는 게 더 어울릴 지도. 능청맞게 시작해 후반부로 갈수록 휘몰아치는 사운드가 백미다. 美 힙합 레전드 'Beastie Boys'에 대한 오마주를 담았다. 찾아보시길.
3. 누가 뭐래도 이 노랜 러브스토리
어느 곡을 타이틀로 밀지 끝까지 고민이 많았다. 당시 후보곡 중 하나. 그동안 가제(假題) '유유'로 불렸다. 드러머 '유유'의 이야기가 모티프가 됐기 때문. 유유가 작사에도 참여했다. 떨어질 줄 모르는 고음행진이 묘미. 녹음 중 비엔나핑거 목에 성대결절이 찾아와 휴식기를 갖기도 했다.
4. 안녕엄마
써놓은 지 수년 만에 빛을 본다. 피싱걸스 결성 전, 비엔나핑거가 이끌었던 밴드 '원래그런시스템'을 통해 활동했던 곡을 완전히 새롭게 각색했다. 음악에 천착했지만 결국 기타도 엄마도 멀어졌다는 청춘의 방황을 노래했다. 쓸쓸한 모던록과 그런지 감성을 섬뜩한 반전으로 구성했다.
