Yoo Chae-hoon’s third solo EP “Sfumato”

There is consistency in solo Yoo Chae-hoon's actions. The point is that he is not bound by his starting point as a vocalist. This contrasts sharply with showing a full-fledged tenor as the leader of La Poem. Perhaps the purpose of Yoo Chae-hoon's solo career was his desire for popular music. You become a ‘singer’ rather than a vocalist. His actions are in a different context from the so-called 'crossover', which brings together two disparate styles. When she sings a pretty ballad, she becomes a singer who fits the song, and when she sings a passionate song, she pours out her raw and rough emotions. He erases the 'boundaries' about music and becomes the vocalist who best suits the song he sings. The variety of genres and styles he sings are not the vocalist's affair, but the essence of singer Yoo Chae-hoon's approach to the song.

Like the previous album title “Impasto,” this album title “Sfumato” is also an art term. The meaning is this:

'Sfumato: A light and dark method that changes colors subtly, like fog, so that they move naturally so that the outlines between colors cannot be clearly distinguished.'

The album title contains the meaning of showing various genres of music without boundaries, like the 'sfumato' technique that blurs the outlines of colors. And the five songs included in the album follow the meaning of the title very faithfully. Although the five songs are tightly connected by Yoo Chae-hoon's strong vocals and soft emotions, each song is colored in a different style.

Among the five songs, 'Summer Poetry' was selected as the title song. The song introduction I received was a poem. 'Love in the summer has always been like that. 'It's like a pouring shower, a lie, or a song.' Yoo Chae-hoon sang about that summer love like a poem that everyone would have loved. The shining scenes in my saved memories seep into my ears like a warm recitation.

‘Wildflowers’, which opens the album, is solemn and majestic. It is a remake of singer Jang Sa-ik's representative song. The sensibility of the original song was expressed with a different sensibility by adding magnificent strings and brass. What is Korean traditional music and what is vocal music?

The attempts at rock style shown in 'Journey' and 'Dream' are also new. 'Journey' has a cool pop rock sound, while 'Dream' has an emotional alter rock sound. 'Journey' brightly expresses the firm determination to find a way back to 'you', and 'Dream' also contains the positive consolation of being together and brightening the future.

‘City Sound’, located at the end, contains Yoo Chae-hoon’s own story. Unlike the romantic and positive feelings shown in the previous songs, a dark atmosphere fills the song. Yoo Chae-hoon's rough vocals, which seem to be filled with anger, are impressive. Yoo Chae-hoon, who came to Seoul to pursue his dream, sang about the difficult reality but still his love for the city that he could not leave. It contains a strong will to fill the city he loves with his voice.

솔로 유채훈의 행보에는 일관성이 있다. 성악가라는 자신의 출발점에 얽매이지 않는다는 점이다. 라포엠의 리더로서 온전한 테너의 모습을 보여주는 것과는 도드라지게 배치된다. 어쩌면 유채훈의 솔로 활동 목적이 대중음악에 대한 갈망이었는지도 모르겠다. 성악가가 아닌 '노래하는 사람'이 되는 것이다. 그의 행보는 이질적인 두 스타일을 하나로 엮는, 이른바 '크로스오버'와도 다른 맥락이다. 예쁜 발라드를 부를 때는 그 곡에 어울리는 가수가 되고, 격정적인 노래를 부를 때는 날것의 거친 감성들을 쏟아낸다. 음악에 대한 '경계'를 지우고 자신이 부르는 노래에 가장 어울리는 보컬리스트가 되어 노래한다. 그가 노래하는 다채로운 장르와 스타일은 성악가의 외도가 아닌 그 곡을 대하는 가수 유채훈의 본질이다.

이전 앨범 타이틀 “Impasto”처럼 이번 앨범 타이틀 “Sfumato”도 미술 용어다. 뜻은 이렇다.

'Sfumato: 안개와 같이 색을 미묘하게 변화시켜 색깔 사이의 윤곽을 명확히 구분 지을 수 없도록 자연스럽게 옮아가도록 하는 명암법.'

색과 색의 윤곽을 흐릿하게 하는 '스푸마토' 기법처럼 다양한 장르의 음악을 경계선 없이 보여주겠다는 의미를 앨범 타이틀에 담았다. 그리고 앨범에 수록된 다섯 곡은 타이틀의 의미를 너무나도 충실히 따르고 있다. 다섯 곡이 유채훈의 단단한 보컬과 부드러운 감성으로 끈끈하게 연결되어 있지만 개개의 곡들은 각기 다른 스타일로 채색되었다.

다섯 곡 중 타이틀곡으로는 '여름시(夏詩)'가 낙점되었다. 전달받은 곡 소개 글이 한 편의 시다. '여름에 하는 사랑은, 항상 그랬다. 쏟아지는 소나기 같거나 거짓말 같거나 노래 같거나'. 누구나 했을 그 여름 사랑을 유채훈이 시처럼 노래했다. 쟁여둔 기억 속의 빛나는 장면이 따스한 낭송처럼 귓가에 스며든다.

앨범의 문을 여는 '찔레꽃'은 비장하고 웅장하다. 소리꾼 장사익의 대표곡을 리메이크했다. 원곡의 감성에 웅장한 스트링과 브라스를 얹어 또 다른 감성으로 풀어냈다. 국악은 무엇이고 성악은 무엇인가...

'Journey'와 'Dream'에서 보여주는 록 스타일 시도들도 새롭다. 'Journey'는 시원한 팝록 사운드, 'Dream'의 감성적인 얼터록 사운드다. 'Journey'는 '너'에게로 돌아가는 길을 찾고야 말겠다는 굳은 의지를 밝게 표현하고 있으며, 'Dream' 역시 함께하며 미래를 밝히는 긍정의 위로가 담겼다.

마지막에 자리한 '도시음'에는 유채훈 본인의 이야기가 담겼다. 앞선 곡들에서 보여준 낭만, 긍정의 느낌과 달리 어두운 분위기가 곡을 가득 채운다. 분노가 담긴 듯한 유채훈의 거친 보컬이 인상적이다. 꿈을 위해 상경한 유채훈 본인의 녹록지 않았던 현실, 하지만 그럼에도 떠날 수 없는 도시에 대한 애정을 노래했다. 자신의 목소리로 애정하는 도시를 가득 채우겠다는 강렬한 의지가 담겼다.
