From the band title, which is inspired by [Holy Mountain] (1992), the second work of the band Sleep, which Matt Pike joined and perfected the stoner metal sound, it is clear what Holy Mountain pursues. It is based on Black Sabbath, the foundation of heavy metal, but re-establishes the elements of heaviness that heavy metal has perfected over the past 50 years in the Holy Mountain way. 1. Stoner/Sludge Metal
One of the most important changes when discussing heavy metal in the 21st century is the spread of styles that are variations of stoner, sludge, or doom metal. Its roots are deep. Beginning in the 1980s, pioneers such as Black Flag, Corrosion of Conformity (COC), and the Melvins began attempting to combine Black Sabird's crazy heaviness with hardcore punk. By the 1990s, when the genre began to develop in earnest, their influence led to the development of the local scene's individuality while sharing the roots of Black Saber. Finally, stoner/sludge emerged as a major subgenre of rock/metal in the 2000s.
The Stoner line, which developed around the western United States, was led by strong leaders such as Kyuss and Sleep, followed by Fu Manchu, High On Fire, and Monster Magnet in the eastern United States. ), and Electric Wizard in the UK. This stoner sound, also known as desert rock, pursues slow but implicit riffs. In the southern United States, similar but different types of dark and evil sludge bands appeared, including Eyehategod, Crowbar, and Soilent Green, which contained a slow and loud southern groove. Pig Destroyer reinterpreted grindcore as stoner to create avant-garde metal, while Baroness and Mastodon created a progressive heavy sound based on stoner.

2. Holly Mountain
Stoner/sludge is not only the most influential subgenre in the current global rock/metal scene, but is also constantly changing by accepting creative attempts from new challengers. It can be said to be the youngest heavy music genre (due to its openness to change) while having the longest history from its ancestor called Black Saber. In Korea, Eden attempted a primitive form in the 1980s, and Black Medicine, Knockdown, Fighting Dogs, and Smoking Barrels played music pursuing stoner/doom metal. Holly Mountain's music breaks away from the doom tendencies pursued by previous bands and attempts to convey the true value and charm of stoner metal through bluesy guitar playing and heavy bass and drum playing that expresses the intense groove of southern metal.
Holy Mountain is comprised of bassist and vocalist Seo Hyeong-jin, who previously worked in Hail Storm and Smoking Barrels, drummer Kim Joseph from Burn My Bridges and Smoking Barrels, and guitarist Jo Soo-yong from Shellback and Smoking Barrels. The three members share the background of having worked together in Smoking Barrels. In addition, they also have musical roots in playing adjacent genres such as groove metal and hardcore punk, which were added throughout the history of stoner/sludge and became a catalyst for development. Thanks to this, Holly Mountain's music has the heavy groove of southern metal and the uncompromising attitude of hardcore naturally flowing throughout the album.

3. Individuality of 7 songs
The first song, '...at the Mountains of Madness', which begins with the desolate sound of the wind, takes its lyrics from HP Lovecraft's novel [Mountains of Madness]. Not only do they actively use the wah-wah pedal for both guitar and bass to create a unique groove, but in the case of bass, they experiment with various sounds using bass synths. The bass's performance can be said to be a possible attempt because the drums and guitar are firmly supported, and thanks to this, the speaker-popping excitement that Cliff Burton gave in 'The Call of Ktulu' is pursued in the Holy Mountain style. This energy continues until the next song, ‘Promised Land’.
The wah pedal's delicious guitar solo and bass performance add just the right amount of flavor to the entire album, like seasoning. If the solo in 'Make My Day' and the bluesy riff in the second half are the flavor of the guitar, the slightly embellished bass performance in 'Sweet Nothings' covers the entire song with the charm of a pulsating groove. The solidity of the drums in harmony with the bass can be clearly seen in 'Show You My Way', which reveals its presence with heavy floor toms and tom toms between the bass playing with the wah-wah pedal. In this song, you can also enjoy the wonderful vocals of Seo Hyung-jin, who expands his unique vocal style between the growling and midrange shouts created by Crash's Ahn Heung-chan, and the band's rich musical nourishment can also be enjoyed in the rough hardcore-style guitar riff.
'Maximum Overdrive' shows what kind of music is created when bluesy stoner metal is turned up to the maximum volume. Stoner metal, which originally started in the Palm Desert area of California, began as a culture of people taking generators and huge amplifiers out into the desert and enjoying the sound at high volume all night long. 'No Compromise' is a song where the influence of both hardcore and groove metal can be felt. From the fast-paced riff to the bass solo with a distorted tone created by pressing the wah pedal all the way, the ferocity that lasts for 1 minute and 50 seconds is hot.
A feast of drums, guitars, and bass, armed with sticky grooves and hot tones, unfolds across seven songs. 홀리마운틴은 헤일스톰, 스모킹배럴즈에서 활동한 바 있는 베이시스트 겸 보컬리스트 서형진, 번 마이 브릿지스와 스모킹배럴즈 출신의 드러머 김요셉, 쉘백과 스모킹배럴즈 출신 기타리스트 조수용으로 구성되어 있다. 세 멤버는 스모킹배럴즈에서 함께 활동했었다는 배경을 공유하고 있다. 여기에 그루브메탈, 하드코어 펑크 등 스토너/슬럿지 역사 내내 더해지며 발전의 마중물이 되어준 인접 장르를 연주했던 음악적 뿌리 또한 가지고 있다. 덕분에 홀리마운틴 음악은 서던메탈의 묵직한 그루브와 하드코어의 타협하지 않는 태도가 자연스럽게 앨범 전체에 출렁대는 모양새다.

3. 7곡의 개성
황량한 바람 소리로 시작하는 첫 곡 '...at the Mountains of Madness'는 가사부터 H.P. 러브크래프트의 소설 [광기의 산맥]에서 모티브를 따왔다. 기타와 베이스 모두 와와페달을 적극 사용하면서 특유의 그루브를 끌어낼 뿐 아니라, 베이스의 경우는 베이스 신스를 이용한 다양한 사운드 실험을 쏟아낸다. 베이스의 활약은 드럼과 기타가 단단하게 받쳐주기 때문에 가능한 시도라 할 수 있는데, 덕분에 클리프 버튼(Cliff Burton)이 'The Call of Ktulu'에서 들려줬던 스피커를 터뜨릴 듯한 박진감이 홀리마운틴 스타일로 추구된다. 이 기운은 이어지는 'Promised Land'까지 고스란히 지속된다.
와와페달의 맛깔난 기타 솔로와 베이스 연주는 앨범 전체에 양념처럼 적절하게 감칠맛을 더한다. 블루지한 스토너메탈을 최대치의 볼륨으로 키우면 어떤 사운드를 담은 음악이 만들어지는지 'Maximum Overdrive'이 보여준다. 애초에 캘리포니아 팜 데저트 일대에서 시작된 스토너메탈은 사막에 발전기와 엄청난 앰프를 싣고 나가 밤새도록 볼륨을 키운 사운드를 즐기던 문화에서 시작되지 않았던가. 'No Compromise'는 하드코어와 그루브메탈의 영향력이 공히 느껴지는 곡이다. 속도감 넘치는 리프에 와와페달을 끝까지 밟으며 만들어진 왜곡된 톤의 베이스 솔로까지 1분 50초를 갈아버리는 광폭함이 화끈하다.
