Q. Congratulations on the release of your second mini-album 'INTERVIEW'! How are you feeling?
A. It's the first mini-album release in 3 years. It already happened. It's the first time I've been promoting my own song as a title, and I'm half excited and half worried that everyone will like it.
Q. The album's name is 'INTERVIEW'. Is there a special reason why you named the album 'Interview'?
A. I think it was the 'interview' that made my name known to many people. I am grateful that many people have loved the interviews I have conducted with domestic and foreign stars such as Robert Downey Jr., Jamie Foxx, and Chloe Moretz. I think interviews are like dating. There are many similarities between the nervous first meeting, being curious about each other, getting to know each other while having conversations with consideration, and gradually opening your heart. A lot of people who are interested in me must have been curious about what a 'singer Eric Nam' would look like instead of an 'interviewer', but it was a pity that I couldn't show you a lot of myself. This mini-album is not an 'interviewer', but an 'interviewee', and it is an album that will satisfy your curiosity about me. I hope this album will be the answer to the question, 'Who is singer Eric Nam?'
Q. The main title song 'Good For You' has an English version as well. What kind of song is it?
A. I think I had a harder time because I felt like I was alone in the world when I was having a hard time. So I wanted to do a 'consoling song' that conveys the message that people who are in a difficult situation are not alone and that someone is by their side. When I write a song, I usually work with English lyrics first, but Spica Boa who cares for me like a younger sister and lyricist Kim Hyun-dong helped me with the Korean lyrics. In terms of songwriting, the composers of 220 and Mingisian helped me finish the composition and arrangement, so I think I was able to come out with a good song. The reason I put the English version together is as a gift for the fans who support me overseas. I hope that many people who are going through a hard time will listen to 'Good For You' and gain strength when they feel alone.
Q. The song 'Interview' you worked on with the hot artist Brother Su stands out. How was working with him?
A. I met Brother Su for the first time through this work, and he made a song called 'Interview' by comparing the album concept, the keyword 'interview', to a thrilling meeting between a man and a woman. At first, it was a simple arrangement with a focus on acoustic guitar, but Brother Su rearranged it to fit the feeling of spring, so it became a sweet song to listen to on a spring day. He has a bright personality and has a lot of ideas, so I was able to work happily. I am looking forward to the music that Brother Su will listen to in the future.
Q. Half of the songs on the album, up to 'Stop The Rain', are self-composed songs. Where do you get your musical inspiration from and what kind of music do you want to create?
A. I think I get my musical inspiration from things I encounter in my daily life. I always keep my eyes wide open because they always come unexpectedly. 'Stop The Rain' is a song I made during a difficult time. The other songs I made at the time were so depressing that I thought I couldn't bear to listen to them, but I'm glad that this song saw the light of day, albeit belatedly. My stress reliever is 'music'. I like songs that are exciting and stimulating, but I think my heart goes more to songs that comfort me when I'm having a hard time. I hope that the music I will show you through various genres in the future will also be music that comforts people's hearts.
Q. What kind of song is the last b-side song called 'No Comment'?
A. This is a song by the composers of MELODESIGN, who produced my digital single 'It's Okay, It's Okay', which was released in March 2015 and was loved by many people. If 'Interview', which I worked on with Brother Su with the keyword 'interview', is a song about a thrilling meeting, 'No Comment' is a song about a heartbreaking breakup. It would be nice to hear how the same keyword was expressed through two different songs. Personally, I really like the song, so I recorded it several times and tried to bring out the emotions.

A. 평소 힘든 일이 있을 때면 세상에 나 홀로 있는 듯한 기분에 더 힘든 시간들을 보냈던 것 같아요. 그래서 지금 힘든 상황에 있는 분들에게 혼자가 아니라고, 누군가는 곁에 있다는 메시지를 담은, '위로가 되는 노래'를 하고 싶었습니다. 저는 곡을 쓸 때 보통 영어 가사로 먼저 작업하는데요, 저를 친동생처럼 아껴주는 스피카 보아 누나와 김현동 작사가님께서 한글 가사 작업 도와주셨습니다. 곡작업에서는 220, 밍지션 작곡가님들께서 작곡과 편곡 마무리를 도와주셔서 좋은 곡이 나올 수 있었던 것 같아요. 영어버전을 함께 담은 이유는 해외에서 저를 응원해주시는 팬분들을 위한 선물이에요. 힘든 시간을 보내고 계신 많은 분들 혼자라 느껴지실 때 'Good For You' 들으며 위로 받으시고 힘내셨으면 좋겠습니다.

A. 브라더수씨는 이번 작업을 통해 처음 만났는데요, 앨범 콘셉트인 '인터뷰'라는 키워드를 어느 남녀의 설레는 만남에 비유해 'Interview'라는 곡을 만들어 주셨습니다. 처음에는 어쿠스틱 기타 위주로 가는 간소한 편곡의 곡이었는데, 브라더수씨께서 봄 느낌에 맞춰 재편곡 해주셔서 봄날에 듣기 좋은 달달한 곡이 되었어요. 성격도 밝고 좋을뿐더러 아이디어도 많으신 분이라 즐겁게 작업할 수 있었습니다. 앞으로 브라더수씨가 들려줄 음악들도 기대가 됩니다.
Q. 'Stop The Rain'까지 앨범 수록곡의 절반이 자작곡이에요. 어디서 음악적 영감을 얻고, 어떤 음악을 만들고 싶으세요?
A. 음악적 영감은 일상 속에서 마주치는 것들로부터 얻는 것 같아요. 늘 갑작스레 찾아오기 때문에 항상 눈 크게 뜨고 다닙니다. 'Stop The Rain'은 제가 힘들었던 시기에 만든 노래입니다. 당시 만든 다른 곡들이 너무 우울해서 차마 들려 드릴 수 없겠다 싶었는데 그 중에서 이 곡이 뒤늦게 나마 빛을 보게되어 기쁩니다. 저의 스트레스 해소제는 '음악'이에요. 신나고 자극적인 노래들도 좋지만, 힘들 때 위로가 되는 노래들에 더 마음이 가는 것 같아요. 제가 앞으로 다양한 장르를 통해 보여드릴 음악들도 공통적으로는 사람들 마음에 위로가 되는 음악이었으면 합니다.
Q. 마지막 수록곡 'No Comment'라는 곡은 어떤 곡이죠?
A. 2015년 3월 발매된, 많은 분들이 사랑해주신 저의 디지털 싱글 '괜찮아 괜찮아'를 프로듀싱 해주셨던 멜로디자인(MELODESIGN) 작곡가님들의 곡입니다. '인터뷰'라는 키워드로 브라더수씨와 작업한 'Interview'가 설레는 만남에 대한 곡이라면, 'No Comment'는 가슴 아픈 이별에 대한 곡이에요. 같은 키워드가 다른 두 개의 곡을 통해 어떻게 표현됐는지 들어보시면 좋을 것 같습니다. 개인적으로 너무 좋아하는 노래여서 여러 번 녹음하며 감정선을 살리려고 노력했습니다.
