It has already been 3 years since the 4th album “Memorize”, which announced their comeback. What changes have happened to Buzz over the past three years? The number of married male members increased to four, vocalist Min Kyung-hoon began to appear on various programs, and the national tour concert that started again drew great responses from old fans, new fans, domestic fans, and overseas fans. It was a colorful and ever-changing three years, as if time passed many times faster than the long blank period.

And the most important thing during the three years was the sheet music that was piled up one by one. We became one again and created a lot of songs, and we were able to not run the frantic time to fill the album. Rather, I was afflicted with the happy agony of being able to choose the best song from the piled up sheet music. This mini-album “Be One” is a record that was completed by selecting good songs from the music that was worked out over three years.

“Be One” is the first mini-album released since debut and contains a total of five songs. The overall feature of the album is its relaxed atmosphere. Joyful songs have their own way, and sad songs also radiate their own composure. It feels like their natural movements, not moving to create something intended, lead to results. The time has come when it is not awkward to attach the word 'specialty' to Buzz.

As for the album title, track 2, 'Like I Didn't Love', was dropped. Min Kyung-hoon's powerful voice stands out as a song that contains the sorrowful feelings of the moment love ends. The band sound and string sound are emphasized without bias, and the charm of a rock ballad is maximized.

'Just One' is also a representative song for the album, conveying excitement to the fans. Intense synth rock was completed by adding the soft joy of the keyboard to the rock sound of Buzz. It is expected that they will exude greater charm on the live stage.

The 4th track 'Tonight' is also an intense rock number, and the tight and full sound knocks on the heart. It is reminiscent of the modern rock songs from the 4th album, but it is strong and comfortable in the ear with a raw sensibility rather than a dreamy sensibility. The intensity of the addictive riff stands out.

In the middle of the album, 'Accompanying' feels mature in the music, lyrics, and Buzz's sensibility to unravel the two. Conversations and stories are conveyed in Min Kyung-hun's vocals, which have been slightly changed from sentimental vocals. The charm of Min Kyung-hoon, who sings as if he were talking or throwing it away, allows him to meet another buzz.

The last track, 'We at that time', was the only one among the tracks that was completed with another composer's song. Composer Lee Sang-jun and composer Cha Gil-wan, who participated as album producers, added lyrics to the song, which was co-created by Lee Sang-jun and members of Buzz. He chose an acoustic guitar and added a soft and warm sensibility to the song, and the piano and strings also contribute to the completion of a warm ballad.

버즈 첫 번째 미니 앨범 “Be One”

복귀를 알린 4집 “Memorize” 이후 벌써 3년이 흘렀다. 3년 동안 버즈에게는 어떤 변화들이 있었을까? 유부남 멤버가 네 명으로 늘었고, 보컬 민경훈은 다양한 프로그램에 얼굴을 보이기 시작했으며, 다시금 시작한 전국 투어 콘서트는 과거의 팬에게도, 새로운 팬들에게도, 국내 팬들에게도, 해외 팬들에게도 큰 호응을 이끌어 냈다. 길었던 공백 기간보다 몇 배나 빠르게 시간이 흐른 듯 다채롭고 변화무쌍한 3년이었다.

그리고 3년의 시간 중 가장 중요한 것은 차곡차곡 쌓인 악보들이었다. 다시 하나가 되어 많은 곡들을 만들어 냈고, 앨범을 채우기 위해 초조한 시간을 달리지 않을 수 있었다. 오히려 쌓여있는 악보 중에서 최상의 곡을 선택 할 수 있는 행복한 고민에 시달렸다. 3년을 다진 음악들 중 좋은 곡들을 선별해서 완성한 음반이 이번 미니 앨범 “Be One”이다.

“Be One”은 데뷔 이후 처음으로 선보이는 미니앨범이고 총 다섯 곡이 수록됐다. 앨범의 전체적인 특징은 여유로움이다. 흥겨운 곡들은 그 나름대로, 애잔한 곡들은 또 그 나름의 여유를 발산한다. 의도된 무언가를 만들어 내기 위해 움직이는 것이 아닌, 이들의 자연스러운 움직임이 결과로 이어지는 느낌이다. ‘관록’이라는 단어를 버즈에게 붙이는 것이 어색하지 않은 그런 때가 왔음이다.

앨범 타이틀로는 2번 트랙에 수록된 ‘사랑하지 않은 것처럼’이 낙점됐다. 사랑이 끝나는 순간의 애절한 감정을 담은 곡으로 민경훈의 힘 있는 보이스가 돋보인다. 밴드 사운드와 현악 사운드가 치우침 없이 강조되며 록발라드의 매력이 극대화 된 곡이다.

‘Just One’ 또한 앨범을 대표할 곡으로 팬들에게 흥분을 전한다. 버즈의 록 사운드에 키보드의 부드러운 흥겨움이 더해지며 강렬한 신스록이 완성됐다. 라이브 무대 위에서 더 큰 매력을 뿜어낼 것으로 기대된다.

4번 트랙 ‘Tonight’ 역시 강렬한 록 넘버로 빈틈없는 꽉 찬 사운드가 심장을 두드린다. 4집 앨범에서 선보였던 모던록 성향의 곡들을 연상시키지만 몽환적 감성보다는 날것의 감성을 담아 강하면서도 편안하게 귀에 꽂힌다. 중독성 있는 리프의 강렬함이 돋보인다.

앨범의 가운데 자리하고 있는 ‘동행’은 음악도 가사도, 그리고 그 둘을 풀어내는 버즈의 감성에서도 원숙함이 느껴진다. 센티멘탈 감성의 보컬에서 약간의 변화를 준 민경훈의 보컬에는 대화와 이야기가 전해진다. 이야기하듯, 내던지듯 노래하는 민경훈의 매력이 또 다른 버즈를 만나게 해준다.

마지막 트랙에 수록된 ‘그때 우리’는 수록곡 중 유일하게 다른 작곡가의 곡을 받아 완성했다. 앨범 프로듀서로 참여한 이상준 작곡가와 차길완 작곡가가 함께 만든 곡에 이상준과 버즈 멤버들이 가사를 더했다. 어쿠스틱 기타를 선택하며 곡에 여리고 따스한 감성을 입혔으며, 피아노와 현악 또한 따뜻한 발라드가 완성되는데 기여하고 있다.

버즈의 데뷔가 2003년, 벌써 15년의 시간이 흘렀다. 그 긴 시간 동안 항상 음악을 소홀히 하지 않았던 이들이 자연스럽게 체득한 ‘관록’. 버즈의 행보는 여전히 가치 있으며, 앞으로의 행보 또한 여전히 더욱 기대된다. (글/대중음악 평론가 이용지)
