최근 가요계에는 공연 현장 음을 담은 라이브 앨범이 거의 사라진 가운데 발매되는 앨범이어서 더욱 눈길을 끈다.
라이브 앨범은 뛰어난 보컬리스트의 전유물로 통해왔다.
국내는 물론 해외에서도 CD나 현장에서의 노래 실력이 거의 차이가 나지 않을 만큼 가창력이 출중한 가수들이 이처럼 현장감을 더하는 콘서트 라이브 앨범을 소개해 팬들을 매료시키곤 했다.
이승철은 국내 최고 보컬리스트다. 지금까지 2000여 회에 이르는 공연을 꾸며오면서 보컬신, 라이브 황제 등의 별명을 얻기도 했다.
이번 라이브 앨범은 2015년 하반기 이후 최근까지 이뤄져온 'The Best Live' 공연을 바탕으로 제작됐다.
일산, 부산, 광주, 서울 인천 등 국내는 물론 캐나다 토론토(로이 톰슨홀), 밴쿠버(올피움씨어터), 뉴질랜드(빅토리 컨벤션센터), 호주 시드니(오페라하우스) 등지로 이어진 투어의 라이브 현장음을 채록해 제작됐다. 특히 언론의 시선을 끌었던 그의 호주 시드니 오페라하우스 입성은 국내 공연사의 한 페이지를 장식할 만큼 의미 있는 일이기도 했다.
이승철은 "공연의 감격을 팬들과 오래 토록 기억하고 더불어 공연을 보지 못한 분들에게는 그 감흥을 대신 전하고자 이번 라이브 앨범을 기획하고, 심혈을 기울여 제작해왔다"고 말했다.
음향 완벽주의로도 유명한 이승철은 "생생한 현장의 소리를 전달하기 위해 20대 이상의 엠비언스 마이크를 사용했으며 월드투어의 모든 공연을 다 녹음해 그 중 좋은걸 추리는데 만도 10일 이상 소요됐다"고 그간의 작업 과정을 소개했다.
해당 현장 음원은 이후 비틀즈가 이용한 영국의 에비로드스튜디오로 공수돼 마스터링 작업이 진행됐다.
마스터링 작업을 진행했던 엔지니어 마일즈쇼웰은 "왜 이승철이라는 가수가 오래토록 전설급 스타로 지내왔는지 이번 작업을 통해 완벽히 이해하게 됐다"면서 "정말 빼어난 가수고, 그의 공연은 대단히 즐겁고도 생동감 넘쳤으며, 또 밴드의 연주 역시 정말 탁월했다"고 작업 소감을 밝혔다.
앨범에는 이런 과정을 거친 12개의 노래가 수록됐다.
투어의 시작을 장식했던 '마이 러브'를 비롯해 '그런 사람 또 없습니다', '인연', '잊었니', '그사람', '사랑하나봐' ,'시간 참 빠르다', '사랑한다구요', '말리꽃' 등의 히트곡이 촘촘히 담겼다.
이밖에 공연의 엔딩을 장식하며 가슴을 뛰게했던 감격의 평화송 '그날에'도 함께 들어갔다.
가수의 숨소리 뿐 아니라 열광하고 환호하는 관객들의 감격스런 반응, 이승철의 밴드인 '황제'의 현장감 넘치는 연주 등이 웅장함을 더한다.
한편 앨범에는 최근 작곡가 용감한 형제와 손잡고 발표해 각종 차트 정상권을 휩쓸었던 화제의 발라드 신곡 '일기장'도 함께 수록돼 팬들의 즐거움을 높인다. MBC <나 혼자 산다> 등에 소개돼 이목을 끌었던 '일기장'은 디지털 싱글 출시 이후 음반으로도 만나고 싶다는 의견이 쇄도해 이번에 특별히 앨범 한 켠에 함께 수록하게 됐다.
