Contemporary Smooth Jazz's New Proposal

The moment you pick up the ninth full-length album <I'm Alright>, you will be surprised by the chameleon-like colorful track list and once again surprised by the talented participating musicians. John Beasley (keyboards, piano) and Benjamin j. World-renowned jazz players such as Shepherd (bass), Terreon Gully (drums), Paul Jackson Jr (guitar), Damon Brown (trumpet), and our musician Charlie Jung (guitar) collaborated on this album as well. He sang both pop and rock classics. These songs give us a colorful look at her ability to interpret and change her songs in a new environment.

In two of them, standard songs “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” and “You and The Night and The Music,” Woongsan shows that given text can be transformed according to the urban texture of smooth jazz. In addition, in “I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know,” a song by Sweet and Tears from 1968, she showed off her own intense bluesy sensibility, and in “I Can't Stand the Rain,” a song by Memphis soul. In "," he went back and forth between humming and singing to bring out the more sticky soul taste than the original song.

On the other hand, the self-composed song “I'm All Right” presents a sample of Woongsan-style smooth jazz with a refined texture and comfortable atmosphere, while remaining faithful to the typical smooth jazz style and adding Korean-style emotions. On the other hand, in “Love Is A Losing Game,” the song with the essence of soul music leads to emotion, making you wonder if it is Woongsan's own song. Here, another self-composed song, “Tell Me Why,” is a song that seems to be sung while holding back tears, conveying a strong sense of exotic and Korean sadness at the same time.

이번 9번째 정규 앨범 < I’m Alright >을 손에 드는 순간, 카멜레온과도 같은 다채로운 트랙리스트에 한번 놀라고, 기라성 같은 참여 뮤지션에 또 한번 놀라게 된다. 뮤지션들의 뮤지션으로 존경 받고 있는 앨범의 프로듀서를 담당한 John Beasley (건반, 피아노)그리고 Benjamin j. Shepherd(베이스), Terreon Gully(드럼), Paul Jackson Jr(기타), Damon Brown(트럼펫) 등 세계적인 재즈 연주자들, 그리고 우리 연주자 Charlie Jung(기타)이 함께 한 이번 앨범에서도 웅산은 자작곡, 스탠더드 곡, 팝, 록의 고전을 고루 노래했다. 이 곡들은 새로운 환경에 대한 그녀의 곡 해석력과 변화를 다채롭게 바라보게 해준다.

그 가운데 두 곡의 스탠더드 곡 “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”, “You and The Night and The Music”에서 웅산은 스무드 재즈의 도시적 질감에 맞추어 주어진 텍스트를 변용할 수 있음을 보여준다. 또한 스윗 앤 티어즈의 1968년도 명곡을 노래한 “I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know”에서는 그녀만의 강렬한 블루지한 감성을 드러냈으며 멤피스 소울의 명곡을 노래한 ‘I Can't Stand the Rain’에서는 허밍과 노래를 오가며 원곡보다 더욱 더 끈적한 소울의 맛을 살려냈다.

한편 자작곡 “I’m All Right”에서는 세련된 질감과 편안한 분위기로 스무드 재즈의 전형에 충실하면서도 한국식 정서를 가미해 웅산식 스무드 재즈의 표본을 제시한다. 반면 “Love Is A Losing Game”에서는 웅산 본인의 자작곡이 맞나 싶을 정도로 소울 음악의 진수를 은 노래가 감동으로 이끈다. 여기에 도 다른 자작곡 “Tell Me Why”에서는 눈물을 안으로 꾹 누르며 부른 듯한 노래로 이국적인 동시에 한국적인 슬픔을 강하게 전달한다.

하지만 더욱더 놀라운 것은, 이렇게 다채로운 레퍼토리와 개성 강한 뮤지션들의 참여 속에서도 하나의 통일된 작품으로 엮어내는 응집력 있는 웅산의 보컬 파워이다. 저마다의 수록곡에 녹아 있는 각기 다른 색감에 고도의 집중력으로 몰입하면서도, 쿨한 소울 창법과 영혼을 적시는 깊은 울림으로 수록곡 전체를 밸런스 있게 잡아가며 앨범 전체를 새로운 유형의 ‘Contemporary smooth Jazz’를 완성해내고 있는 것이다

2015년의 8번째 앨범 < Temptation >부터 스무드 재즈에 관심을 본격적으로 드러낸 웅산은, 이번 9번째 앨범으로 스무드 재즈의 세계적인 전형을 따르면서도, 웅산이라는 보컬의 개성이 담뿍 담긴 스무드 재즈를 들려준다. 폭발과 절제를 넘나드는 감정의 완급과 타의 추종을 불허할 천부적인 곡 해석력으로 대변되는 ‘웅산 스타일’은 스타일과 상관 없이 빛나는 웅산의 매력을 새삼 확인하게 해준다.
