A person who does not know how to swim in the water world- sea wave
There are times when living feels like swimming to me. Because I can't swim. I went to a swimming class when I was young. I remember standing in line in front of the lane and jumping into the water when the teacher blew the whistle. I had to go at a moderate speed so as not to get too far away from the person in front of me, but I never managed to do that. Every time I entered the water at a depth that my feet couldn't reach, I struggled, not knowing what to do. One day, my mother came to see my class, but she took pity on me for not being able to move forward no matter how much I splashed, so she stopped the swimming class. The relationship between me and water came to an end, leaving only memories of the smell of bleach, the air in the public shower room, and the restrained whistle.
Since then, whenever my heart gets tired, I think of the image of the wide and deep sea. The whole world is made up of water, and people in it breathe, float, and swim naturally, but somehow I imagine that everything is burdensome and unnatural because I have not learned how to live in water. It occurred to me that I was lacking some vital survival skill, like living as a person who couldn't swim in a world of water. When I felt like a defective product, a dish missing an important ingredient, a ship that didn't float, or a submarine that didn't sink, I curled up and played dead. I was sad that nothing happened and hoped nothing would happen. I wished that everything would pass quickly and that the next day would not come.
[Pretend to be dead] contains songs made from 2016 to this year. These are my own ways of dealing with a world that feels like huge, terrifying waves. Even if you run away, hide, use a herd, cry, ridicule, or get angry, there will be no clear answer. Nonetheless, I hope that these songs will give you a little comfort if you have friends like me who are struggling in the water world.

물 세상에서 헤엄칠 줄 모르는 사람-해파
살아가는 것이 제게는 수영하는 것처럼 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 저는 수영을 못하거든요. 어릴 적 수영반에 다닌 적은 있습니다. 레인 앞에 줄을 서서 선생님이 호루라기를 불면 물에 뛰어들어야 했던 기억이 납니다. 앞사람과 간격이 너무 벌어지지 않도록 적당한 속도로 나아가야 했는데 한 번도 그렇게 하지를 못했습니다. 발이 닿지 않는 깊이의 물에 들어서면 매번 어쩔 줄을 모르고 허우적거렸습니다. 어느 날은 엄마가 수업을 보러 왔는데 아무리 물장구를 쳐도 앞으로 나아가지 못하는 제 모습을 가엾게 여겨 수영반을 그만두게 해줬습니다. 락스 냄새와 공용 샤워실의 공기, 절도 있는 호루라기 소리의 기억만을 남긴 채 그렇게 저와 물과의 연은 끝이 났습니다.
그 이후로 마음이 힘들어질 때마다 넓고 깊은 바다의 이미지를 떠올립니다. 온 세상이 물로 이루어져 있고 그 안의 사람들은 당연스럽게 숨 쉬고 떠다니고 헤엄치는데 나만 어쩐지 물에 사는 법을 배우지 못해서 모든 일이 버겁고 부자연스러운 것은 아닐까 하는 상상을 합니다. 물 세상에서 헤엄칠 줄 모르는 사람으로 사는 것처럼 제게 무언가 중요한 생존 능력이 결여되어 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 결함 있는 상품, 중요한 재료가 빠진 요리, 물에 뜨지 않는 배, 가라앉지 않는 잠수함이 된 기분이 들 때는 몸을 웅크리고 죽은 척을 했습니다. 아무 일이 일어나지 않는 것을 슬퍼하며 어떤 일도 생기지 않기를 바랐습니다. 모든 것이 어서 지나가기를 바라면서 다음 날이 오지 않았으면 했습니다.
[죽은 척하기]에는 2016년부터 올해까지 어푸어푸하며 만든 노래들이 담겨 있습니다. 거대하고 공포스러운 파도처럼 느껴지는 세상에 대한 제 나름의 방책들입니다. 도망가고, 숨어보고, 떼를 쓰고, 울고, 조롱하고, 화를 내도 뚜렷한 답은 없겠지요. 그럼에도 저처럼 물 세상에서 고전하고 있는 친구들이 있다면 이 노래들이 작은 위로가 되었으면 하는 마음입니다.
