‘매드타운’은 지난 11월 ‘OMGT’ 활동을 통해 힙합 악동들의 무대 매너를 선사하고 이어 프로듀서로도 변신 해 음악성을 겸비한 아티스트로써 나아가는 모습을 대중들에게 각인시키면서 대세 아이돌로 자리잡았다. 이러한 ‘매드타운’이 기존 악동의 이미지와는 반대로 남자다운 매력을 선보이며 깊고 짙어진 감성미 풍기는 모습으로 돌아왔다. 세 번째 미니 앨범 [Emotion]은 감성 미디움 힙합 곡이 다수 수록되어 사랑과 이별에 대처하는 일곱 남자들의 이야기를 만들어 냈다.
이번 앨범의 모든 컨셉을 대표할 타이틀곡인 ‘빈칸’은 퍼블리싱 작곡가팀 클래프크루(CLEF CREW)가 참여하고, 작곡가 B-rock(비록), j-lin(제이린)이 프로듀싱한 곡이다. 따뜻한 느낌의 어쿠스틱 기타가 어우러지며 힙합적인 드럼, 샘플링 등이 조화를 이루는 어반 뮤직으로 ‘매드타운’만의 세련됨과 감성이라는 두 마리 토끼를 모두 잡아냈다.
특히, 이번 앨범에서 주목할 점은 ‘빈칸’ 이라는 단어이다. 멤버 ‘버피’ 랩 가사 중 “I (빈칸) you 안에는 수 많은 의미가” 라는 구절을 통해 헤어진 연인과의 사랑, 지워진 추억 등 다양한 감정 표현과 수 많은 의미가 내포되어 있으며 함축적 의미로는 ‘매드타운’을 그리워한 팬 들의 공허한 마음을 표현했다. 공백기 동안에 생긴 빈칸을 본 앨범을 통해 가득 채우겠다는 의미를 담아 앨범 이미지에 색조명을 사용해 꽉 찬 분위기를 만들어 냈다.
뮤직비디오는 채워지지 않은 마음 속의 공허한 ‘빈칸’을 묘사하고자 황량한 느낌을 담아내기 위해 로케이션 촬영이 진행되었다. ‘매드타운’ 멤버들의 작은 움직임, 표정 연기, 머릿결과 옷자락 등에 미묘하고 섬세한 묘사에 초점을 맞추었고 요즘 대세 라고 불리는 멤버 ‘조타’의 회상을 통해 추억과 시간을 되돌리고 싶은 이별의 감정을 연기하여 극 중 감정선을 강조, 리버스샷을 통한 시간의 흐름을 역행하는 등의 아름다운 영상미를 선사하였다.
